ThanksgivingTravel can be Fun , Believe it or not!

Basic Comments Off

There’s no reason to be worried about the prospect of traveling this Holiday season. Whether you’re hopping in the car to drive a few blocks or taking a trans-oceanic journey to meet your special relatives or friends; the key to successful travel with children is planning.

Planning can be simple or it can be difficult, the first thing you’ll want to do is to make sure that all your accommodations are kid friendly and within your resources so you’re not having to worry about where your kids are or whether have enough money to stay at the particular accommodations that looked so good on the internet.

After you’ve got your rooms lined up you can then concentrate on how you’re going to get there.

If possible, check out as many ways as you can to get to your destination. There might be fun and exciting ways to get there even if it’s just around the block or a few miles away. Perhaps you could take a taxi?

Or remember the old days when, on Thanksgiving, we all walked to Grandma’s house? Maybe your kids would like to take a long walk? Or even the bus? An adult can take the packages in a car and that will free up you and the kids to go by any means you can think of. Maybe it’s time to see if you really can ride a bike, even if it’s been 10 years since you’ve been on one.

If you’re going a long distance then your pre-planning process will be a lot different and because of the many travel limitations you’ll have a lot less choice in your travel alternatives. The key to success in long distance (that means airports mostly) is to get to know the places you will be spending time between planes. If you have access to a computer get online and explore maps of the various airports you’ll be visiting. Learn where everything is; the bathrooms, the shops, the play areas (if any), and most importantly where you can sit quietly while you wait for your jet. It’s true you can find many bargain flights on the internet but make sure that the kids will be okay with your plans too. A “red eye” flight might be a bargain but will the kids be at there best at grandma’s the next day?

Holiday Travel can be Pleasurable, believe it or not! It just takes a little planning.

Moving software for moving companies

Basic Comments Off

I wrote eMover-software back in 1997 to help organize and manage my moving company, because at that time it was pretty difficult to find a good moving software. Emover-Software became very popular and purchased and used by more than 100 companies in US and Canada.
Originally it was written as a desktop Windows based software. But the growth of high-speed Internet and popularity of Internet moving leads created a new challenge for moving company software. Many movers cannot afford an expensive moving software that requires an internal network, server and IT personnel. That’s why now we have an affordable alternative to the Windows based software – a browser based software for moving company.
All you will need to run this software is a high-speed Internet connection (DSL or better) and your favorite browser – IE or Firefox. No additional software installation required. And there is no out-of-pocket expenses – just easy monthly payments. Setup takes a couple of minutes and doesn’t require computer skills. It is as easy to use as any other website, such as your email editor.
And if you want to have your own server so you won’t depend on Internet connection – you still can. We can install it on your server as well.

  • Automatic lead parsing from any source. System will recognize lead formats from any popular lead provider or from your website form.
  • Auto-reply features with unlimited scheduling. You can program the system to send emails to your prospective customers based on type of move, status of the lead, size of shipment etc. at any schedule.

Responsible Demolition

Basic Comments Off

Introduction

Taking down old buildings and replacing them with new is a process that has been going on for thousands of years. The destruction of buildings was normal during battles and skirmishes of villages; and also due to natural disturbances such as earthquakes or volcanic activity. The resultant ruins would need to be removed and rebuilt.

So the idea of demolition would have come about where a population wished to re-inhabit a specific area or site. (One famous example is the Holy Temple in Jerusalem which was deliberately destroyed by the Assyrians around 586 BCE. After 50 years of Assyrian occupation the Jews returned to Jerusalem and began the re-construction of the second temple which took seventy years to complete.)

However the actual word to demolish only came into being in 1570, and has been used since then, in the way we understand it today, to mean the deliberate taking down or destroying of a building or structure.

Preserving the Past – Preparing the Future

In a country like Britain with a very dense population per square mile, there is a limited amount of available land that can be used for development . In Britain there is a policy of protected land between built up areas of the villages and towns known as Green Belt. This means the land is from urban development to preserve the agricultural and natural heritage which is vital to the economy and structure of the country.

The outcome of this policy is that there is a constant shortage of land for housing and industry, so the developers have to be more creative when providing accommodation for the population. One of the ways of doing this is to find places where the buildings are no longer commercially viable or have been abandoned, and then re-use the area for a new purpose.

These areas are known as Brownfield, or Greyfield sites. In some cities, particularly Leeds and Manchester, instead of demolishing the old warehouses or factories, they have been converted into apartments, retaining the original shell and reconfiguring the internal dimensions into valuable living accommodation.

Brownfield sites are disused industrial and commercial facilities where the land may have been contaminated with hazardous waste or pollution. They are potentially valuable for significant redevelopment once they have been cleaned up. Greyfield sites are urban properties that have been underutilised or abandoned, but do not have the environmental issues of brownfield sites. They were termed greyfield sites because of large areas of asphalt that covered the land such as old car parks. These sites are valuable because they already have the infrastructure such as water, sewage, electricity and gas in place and do not need a great deal of remedial work to exploit the site.

When a structure is to be demolished there are many different aspects to consider and various ways of approaching the task. The size and construction of the building, the new proposed use of the site and whether or not there are valuable elements suitable for re-use, will all determine how it is to be dismantled.

Traditional Demolition

Traditionally, once all the services were disconnected, the machinery and men would go in and just knock down the walls which caused the roof to collapse inwards and then all they needed to do was to drag all the wreckage away. Any concrete hard standing would be broken up ready for removal. The traditional excavation of waste would be to remove and disposed of it at landfill sites.

However modern demolition practices are very controlled and are subject to strict planning, safety and monitoring regulations.

Small structures such as two or three storey houses can be dismantled quite easily with hydraulic excavators and bulldozers using an undermining process. The walls are undermined at the base, in order to topple the structure; at the same time the manner and direction of the fall is controlled. Safety issues and clean-up procedures need to be considered when determining how the building will be undermined and demolished.

Larger buildings such as tower blocks and chimneys require more specialist techniques, and these are discussed in more detail below.

Deconstruction

A new more recent approach to demolishing buildings is deconstruction – which is a green approach. The aim is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites by carefully preserving valuable materials to be reused. Although the work may be a painstaking task of dismantling by hand – brick by brick – or beam by beam, the reclaimed materials can then be recycled or re-used for future buildings. The results of deconstruction can save in excess of 90% waste from going to landfill sites. When the farmer opposite to my house sold his farm yard with barns for housing, the builder demolished the barns, cleaned up the bricks and reused them for the perimeter wall of the farmhouse. At the time I was looking for some rubble as a base for a path and the builder let me take several barrow loads off his pile.

Recycling

Historically when old buildings were ruined from disuse or war damage the local people would gradually remove the stone and use it to build their new structures such as houses or barns. The stone used to construct Hadrian’s wall between Carlisle and Newcastle has mostly disappeared because the local population made off with the beautifully dressed stone after the Romans left, to use in their own buildings. So even in those days people understood the value of recycling because it was much cheaper than having to quarry and dress the stone themselves.

At one time the rubble resulting from a demolished building would be taken to a landfill site for disposal. Now however concrete is easily broken up with the latest machine called a guillotine and the resultant rubble can be crushed and used as sub-base material for the foundation of new buildings that replace the old, or sent to other construction sites. These days this crushed rubble is called 6f2 crushed stone or 6f2 crushed material.

Modern machinery and techniques allows the demolition companies to efficiently segregate waste types on or off-site. Wherever possible construction materials are recycled and re-used in the new structures. Recycling of waste contributes to a substantial savings in project costs as well as being good for the environment.

When we renovated our bungalow 20 years ago the builder, who was a bell ringer, found an old beam from a bell tower that was being renovated, and after carefully treating it, installed it in the kitchen. It made a feature of the room giving it some badly needed character and has never needed any further treatment.

Copper pipes, wiring, roof tiles or slates, floor tiles and doors, and wood panelling are some of the valuable objects that are saved for recycling and re-use. There are specialist yards in many towns where reclaimed old or antique artefacts are available for purchase.

Tall Buildings

For building demolition on very tall buildings real experts are required .

In some cases a wrecking ball on a crane may be used to demolish the top part of a tall building until it is down to a manageable height. However these days this process is rarely used by professional demolition companies because of the uncontrollable factor of the swinging ball and the proximity of other buildings.

Other methods of demolition of tall buildings are by implosion using explosives, controlled collapse and piecemeal. Also ‘High Reach’ demolition excavators are used where explosives are not appropriate . Once the building is down to a more manageable height demolition continues in the usual way.

The steeplejack Fred Dibnah became famous in the late 1970’s for his work on demolishing tall chimneys without the need for explosives. He would cut an ingress at the base of the chimney, use wooden props to support the brickwork and then burn the props so that the chimney toppled hopefully in the right direction. One time he was nearly killed because it didn’t topple in quite the right direction.

The tallest building to be lawfully demolished was the Singer Building of New York in 1967/8. More recently the collapse of the World Trade Centre after the 9/11 attack in 2001 demonstrates the terrible devastation that occurs if the demolition is not controlled and very carefully contained.

Explosions

What usually comes to mind for many people when they think about demolition would be the dramatic collapse of a tall building using explosives. However it is usually the process of implosion, using explosives, that brings down a tall building so that it does as little damage as possible to the surrounding environment. Implosion is essential for dense urban areas and is very fast, the collapse taking only seconds, with the building dropping inwards into its own footprint.

Using explosives is very specialist work and is a highly skilled process and getting it wrong can bedevastating. If an implosion is not prepared correctly the danger may be damage to neighbouring structures or even killing onlookers from flying debris. Even more dangerous is a partial collapse of a building where the remaining structure is unstable and there are still primed explosives that failed to go off. Workers are in great danger if or when they continue the demolition.

Other potential risks of working with explosives occurs when the atmospheric pressure from low cloud above the implosion site may cause the shockwave to spread outwards instead of upwards. The wave of energy and sound created will break windows and cause other damage to the surrounding buildings. Because of the dangers of working with explosives, implosion will only be used when other methods are too costly or impractical.

Health and Safety

Demolition of any building is highly dangerous and is a much more complicated and technical process than most people would realise. Experienced and skilled operators are essential to ensure safety for both workers and public alike. The stability of any structure is reliant on the interdependence of its component parts, so an incorrect sequence of dismantling could result in a premature collapse.

Survey of Demolition

Identification of any structural problems as well as risks associated with hazardous or flammable substances the presence of asbestos, for example, requires expert asbestos surveys to be carried out.

Where petrol has been stored, in a disused garage for example, precautions need to be taken to prevent a fire hazard.

Health and safety is paramount in demolition work so personnel working in the industry have to be thoroughly trained. It is advisable for operatives to have gained a Certificate of Competence in Demolition to ensure they have the necessary skills and safety awareness. All demolition work is regulated by the Construction, Design and Management Regulatory Body.

Sequence of Demolition

There are regulations in place as to the sequence of actions before any demolition can be performed. Each area council will have their own specific list for planning approval, and they vary from area to area, but a typical order would be as follows:-

Provision of Information

The demolition company must provide information about the construction to be demolished, its previous use and the appropriate demolition method to be applied including disposal of any hazardous substances

Preferred and Safe Method of Work

Any reputable company involved in demolition will know and understand the most suitable methods of disposal. Planning and outlining the dismantling process is necessary for assiduous monitoring. A detailed statement outlining the safety process has to be agreed by all parties involved before any demolition can take place.

Preparation and Planning

There is a great deal of preparation to be done before any work can start on the demolishing of the building itself. Issues such as asbestos abatement, disconnecting utilities, rodent baiting, dealing with hazardous substances and making safe any electric, gas or other services have to be resolved.

Protection of the Public

Where demolition is carried out in heavily populated areas the protection of the public is without question paramount. Safety cannot be compromised. Temporary services may need to be arranged, health hazards assessed and people inconvenienced will need to be informed.

Conclusion

The word ‘demolish’ is interpreted as the deliberate and controlled collapse of a structure. This is usually done to make way for future structures or to make an existing structure safe. Demolition work is a very hazardous business and demolishing any building is a complex and skilled process. The aim in demolition is to remove an unwanted building as safely and quickly as possible, recycle or re-use most of the old material, and clear the site ready for the subsequent use.

In the centre of Nottingham over the last few years there has been a major reconstruction of what was an old car park into a brand new shopping centre. While this was going on the public were only really aware of the boarding around the area, a change in traffic direction and maybe some big lorries going in and out of the site.

So the next time you see buildingsbeing demolished to make way for the new, give a thought to the company involved who’s team are daily working in a very dangerous environment, adhering to all of the regulations and carefully and meticulously carrying out the project to bring us the modern conveniences we have come to expect and clearing the way for the future.

Why Choose Natural Oak Flooring over Engineered Flooring

Basic Comments Off

It is a mystery to me why people don’t see the benefits of solid wood flooring, whether it is natural oak or engineered walnut or whatever. The fact is that real wood flooring adds a touch of class to your home. It is true that laminated flooring is a cheap alternative, but it is easily damaged, and if so you need to replace the board. The thing is that good solid wood floors give you lots of opportunities in your furnishing, and they will go with almost anything you can think of.

However, you might want to consider engineered wood flooring. This is one of the newer materials out there, and it can have a wider variety of finishes. For example, you can have oak, elm, cherry, alder, acacia, walnut, hornbeam, steamed beech, maple, birch, beech and ash, which is quite a range. The reason for this is that engineered wood flooring consists of layers of wood, and the lower layers are made of cheap plywood or chipboard. Usually, the boards are 20mm thick, with a 6mm thick layer of the wood of our choice.

Really, if you have decided that you want oak flooring, you need delay no more; just pop into your local flooring store and buy the natural oak flooring material for your house. A good thing about natural oak is that the planks really show the grain. Remember, though, that it is imperative that you hire the right professionals to get the installation of your floors done properly so that it looks a million dollars.

Although natural oak flooring is really a very popular material for hardwood flooring you might want to see it installed somewhere else before buying. If you can, attempt to find out the quality of the material that had been used. Fitting the natural wood floor is a tough job and it requires an expert to get the flooring flawlessly. On the other hand, engineered wood flooring can be installed more easily.

If you are seeking to enjoy natural oak flooring or something like engineered American walnut, you will want to go the best flooring store, and find out about prices. Of course you can also do this on the internet.

Look For Design Company Results

Basic Comments Off

Normally, if you want to have professional web designers custom build your site, you must be prepared to dish out at least a couple thousand Rands. First, you must understand that it is a rip off to get the big companies to design websites for you.

Therefore, it would be wise to find freelance web designers who work from home. However, choose your web designer with care. Another route you can take is to design your website yourself.

There is however a caveat.

Convincing your prospects to purchase from you is a hard job, but have you ever thought that you’re making the process twice as difficult for both parties if your prospects are convinced but don’t know how to buy from you? No matter how good you are at convincing your prospects, they won’t buy if they find the process cumbersome. You can also reduce the chances of losing prospects by putting a prominent link to your order page from every other page on your site.

Also, do you offer multiple payment options? Some people may feel comfortable paying via Paypal, some may only want to pay with their credit card and others might want to send a cheque. You can also offer a money back guarantee so that people will feel confident about buying from you.

Make them feel safe about buying something from you, a total stranger to them on the other end of the Internet.

Eliminate any chances of that to maximize your profits! Flash-based sites have been a craze since the past few years, and as Macromedia compiles more and more great features into Flash, we can only predict there will be more and more flash sites around the Internet.

Programmers and designers have used Flash to create interactve features ranging from very lively feedback forms to attractive Flash-based games. When you position your site elements in Flash, they will always appear as they are as long as the user has Flash Player installed. Flash is a lightweight option for animation because it is vector based (and hence smaller file sizes) as opposed to real ‘movie files’ that are raster based and hence much larger in size.

If you want to know more about website designer then you should have a look at web designer as well as website designer

You’ll also have to put in additional work in redirecting the user to the Flash download page if he or she doesn’t have the player installed. If your content was presented in Flash, most search engines wouldn’t be able to index your content.

The longer your Flash takes to load, the more you risk losing visitors. Otherwise, use a mixture of Flash and HTML or use pure text if your site is purely to present simple textual and graphical information.

Flash animation is not much different from normal animation as every bit of the animation has to be done by hand. Hence, it is important to practise good design principles to make sure your site reaches out to the maximum number of visitors and sells to as many people as possible.

Make sure you have clear directions on the navigation of your website. They make your site load very slowly and more often than not they are very unnecessary.

This is important because a block of text that is too large will deter visitors from reading your content. If your website looks great in Internet Explorer but breaks horribly in Firefox and Opera, you will lose out on a lot of prospective visitors. Also, scripts are not supported across all browsers, so some visitors might miss important information because of that.

Evolution of the Bifocals

Basic Comments Off

The United States gentleman of scientific discipline, Ben Franklin, who endured both nearsightedness as well as presbyopia, invented bifocals in 1784 to avoid needing to often alternate between 2 pairs of eyeglasses.

The 1st lenses for repairing astigmia were manufactured by the British astronomy expert George Airy in the year 1825.

Along the rich history of bi focal reading glasses, the building of eyeglass frames also progressed. In early stages glasses were contrived to be either held in place with your hand or by maintaining force on the nose. Girolamo Savonarola noted that oculars could be held in place with a ribbon passed over a person’s head, which in turn was held secure by the weight of one’s hat.

Entering modern bifocal history, the contemporary fashion of bifocals supported by temples passing over the ears, was produced in 1727 by the British lens creator Edward Scarlett. These designs were not instantly prosperous, however, and various styles with attached handles like “scissors-glasses” and lorgnettes remained fashionable throughout the eighteenth and into the early nineteenth century.

In the early twentieth century, Moritz von Rohr at Zeiss produced the Zeiss Punktal spherical point-focus lens system which dominated the eyeglass lens field for several years.

Despite the improving fame of contacts and laser restorative eye surgery, spectacles stay rather common, as their technology has continued to improve. For example, it’s currently possible to buy frames constituted of special memory metal alloys that return to their correct configuration after being bent. Other frames have spring-loaded hinges.

Glasses have come a long way, haven’t they? In fact, today you can even buy bi focal sunglasses.

Many of these modern contraptions are also distinctly better capable of resisting the stresses of everyday wear and tear as well as the occasional accident. Contemporary frames are also frequently made from substantial, light-weight materials like titanium alloys which were not obtainable in earlier times.

CSS web design

Basic Comments Off

Web style sheets have been around for a number of years, but their power and importance went largely unnoticed since few implementations existed. Web Designers, anxious to add creativity to their pages by influencing the presentation, began to use Netscape’s proprietary extensions rather than the more powerful style sheets. This was quite natural, since Netscape’s proprietary extensions could be seen by a significant portion of Web users, while few would see style sheet enhancements.

Today, more and more browsers are implementing style sheets, opening authors’ eyes to unique features that allow influence over web design while preserving platform independence. The advantages of style sheets became apparent, as did the disadvantages of continually creating more HTML tags for presentation effects.

Netscape’s BODY attributes are now widely accepted on the Web, and have become standardized in HTML 3.2. Yet BGCOLOR, TEXT and friends simply do not provide the flexibility of style sheets. Most background images would leave a page unreadable to someone whose display only offered 16 colors; many pages are difficult to read with only 256 colors. With conventional BODY attributes, a web designer must choose whether the benefits of a background image outweigh the costs; with style sheets, an author can offer a number of different images, in different style sheets, so that the user can choose the “24-bit style sheet” or “8-bit style sheet,” depending on how many colors his or her system can display. If no author-supplied style suits the user, he or she can simply ignore the web designer’s style.

Style sheets can make an author’s life much easier. While one could use <HR WIDTH=”75%” SIZE=5 ALIGN=center> for every horizontal rule, this becomes very cumbersome for the web designer. With style sheets, one only needs to specify such presentational preferences once, and the style can be applied to an entire site. And if the author decides that WIDTH=”50%” would be better, then he or she only needs to change this preference in one place, rather than having to search through hundreds of pages to change the HTML. Not only that, but style sheets also reduce download time when one file contains all the style information.

Style sheets also offer much more flexibility in terms of the presentation effects that they provide. Properties such as color, background, margin, border, and many more can be applied to all elements. With just HTML and its proprietary extensions, one must rely on attributes like BGCOLOR, which are only available for a few elements. Style sheets give the flexibility of applying a style to all paragraphs, or all level-two headings, or all emphasized text.

With style sheets, authors can use the text-indent property to indent text, rather than resorting to ugly kludges like <DD> or <IMG SRC=”blank.gif” WIDTH=10 ALT=”"> that carry with them many negative side-effects. Margins can be suggested without having to put the entire page in a table. Style sheets also reduce the need for multi-file search and replace; if an author decides to change the indentation of all paragraphs on a site, he or she only has to change one line on a style sheet.

Style sheets represent an enormous step forward for web design. With the separation of content and presentation between HTML and style sheets, the Web no longer needs to drift away from the strong ideal of platform independence that provided the medium with its initial push of popularity. Web designers can finally influence the presentation of documents without leaving pages unreadable to users.

Premises assurance vendors and gratis quotes

Basic Comments Off

Owners of a property might select their insurance company absolutely freely on the German marketplace. So the owner should use that chance to do a price comparison via Internet and find the favorite premises assurance vendor. Here are several interesting points which should be taken into consideration when searching the best German home insurance provider via Internet:

The owner could include various risks in the edifice insurance. The risk protection against damage from fire, lightning, windstorm, hail and tap water is quite essential. According to the position of your home additional risks should be thought of. If you want to save money, it could be beneficial to agree to a deterrent fee in case of harm. Numerous building insurance providers offer agreements which include participation and therefore savings for the customer.

It is not mandatory to visit all the German building assurance suppliers personally when you are searching a good solution. You can get an online comparison and even effect your building assurance on the Internet. The following site gives a gratis research of edifice insurance providers as well as the chance to buy your favorite insurance on the Internet: Billige Wohngebaeudeversicherung

Customers living near a river with potential floodwater should investigate if their edifice assurance offerer offers shelter from that specific danger. Insurance defense from storm damage should definitely be thought about due to the increasing number of heavy storms during the past years in Germany. The higher the risk in the geographical location of your premises, the higher the assurance costs will be. Besides the covered exposures there is another important point which determines the costs of your premises assurance, and this is of course the value of your building. So it can be beneficial to consider a deterrent fee to lower the insurance charges.

Everybody, who is the owner of a home, can contract property assurance to shelter themselves against the monetary exposure of damage to the house. Natural hazards might be a great danger for your home. So everybody should look for a home insurance which is covering these special peril. Some natural hazards, which should be thought about, are floods, hail and thunderstorms. Insurance defense might also be taken against special natural dangers like earthquakes, landslides and avalanches.
